Couple has difficulty paying Dh50,000 fine for hiring nanny with no employment papers

  DUBAI - A Filipina and her unemployed Pakistani husband are in a quandary on how to pay a fine of Dh50,000 for hiring a Filipina nanny who had no employment papers. But Hanelyn and her husband Muneeb, who both live in Al Nahda, say they are not to blame for what happened. Hanelyn said that last January, she and Muneeb met the Filipina and decided to hire her as a nanny to take care of their nine-month-old daughter. That was when their nightmare started, she said. The couple got into trouble when the nanny jumped off the balcony of their apartment located at the third floor of a residential building when the latter couldn't produce her working visa. "We asked her for the passport and an NOC (no objection certificate) from her previous employer but she kept delaying the matter saying she could still not procure the documents from her earlier employer. Three weeks flew by and the same situation continued until one evening, she jumped out of our third floor balcony," Hanelyn told XPRESS. Responding policemen soon discovered that the nanny was staying illegally in the country and had no work permit. This led to Muneeb's imprisonment for three days. Hanelyn and her husband were also ordered to pay a fine of Dh50,000 for hiring an undocumented foreigner. Hanelyn also said her passport and that of her husband's were withheld thereafter until they can pay the fine. Up to now, they still cannot pay the penalty because they have no source of income after Hanelyn decided to resign as an administrator of an office so she can take care of her daughter while Muneeb became jobless when the company he worked closed down. Hanelyn said she managed to get her passport back to travel to the Philippines after her mother died. She tried to sell their land in her hometown so that they can use the money to pay the fine but failed to dispose of the property.
