Filipino artist creates new mural in Dubai’s historic Al Fahidi
A mural by a Dubai-based Filipino artist has added new colour to Dubai’s historic Al Fahidi district. Mark Barretto’s mural is part of the Sikka Art and Design Festival. Barretto’s mural, titled Tomorrow, was unveiled on Friday (February 24). This is the third time that Barretto has been chosen as one of the featured artists to showcase their work in the Sikka Art and Design Festival. “Visitors can view my piece on the wall near House 10, which will be up during the festival and remain on display for a year,” Barretto told Expatmedia.net. According to the Sikka Art and Design Festival, The Filipino’s mural “is derived from the notion of the past, the present, and the future. Shaped in a silhouette that resembles a digital form, it enfolds a child holding a flower to represent hope and aspirations deeply rooted in its heritage. It is also a response to the architecture of the historical district of Al Fahidi, which bears essential traits in fostering culture and heritage. The mural hopes to inspire the new generations to hold on to its roots in navigating the promises of tomorrow.” Barretto is known for mixing characters and shapes inspired by the street and urban culture, as seen through his paintings, prints, clothing, and sculptures. Some of his murals adorn the walls of adidas Originals stores in Manila, Noon headquarters in Riyadh, DMCC Crypto Centre in Dubai and Virgin Megastore in Abu Dhabi.Barretto has been part of international art events, not just in the UAE, but in the US, Mexico, Germany, Belgium, Italy, South Korea, Malaysia, Hong Kong and the Philippines.
