The Aspin, short for "asong Pinoy" (Filipino dog), is one of the most underappreciated yet exceptional dog breeds in the Philippines. Known for their intelligence, loyalty, and resilience, Aspins have become an integral part of Filipino culture and everyday life. From being a staple sight on the streets to gaining popularity as beloved house pets, the Aspin's rise in prominence symbolizes not just their value but also the love that Filipinos have for their native dogs. However, recent events have sparked conversations around breed discrimination, igniting a movement for greater respect for these incredible animals. Recently, a controversy involving an Aspin named Yoda at a well-known Filipino restaurant, Balay Dako, highlighted how some establishments may inadvertently discriminate against local breeds. In a now-viral social media post, dog owner Lara Antonio shared her disappointment after her Aspin was initially allowed inside the restaurant but later denied entry due to its size. According to Antonio, the restaurant's management had cited a weight limit for medium-sized dogs, which her 18-kilogram Aspin supposedly exceeded. This sparked outrage online, with many questioning whether the restaurant was practicing breed discrimination. The incident prompted widespread support for Aspins from the Filipino public. The Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) condemned the restaurant’s actions, calling for respect and dignity for all animals, regardless of breed. This sentiment echoes a growing movement that encourages Filipinos to embrace and take pride in their local dog breed. Aspins, with their natural charm and versatility, are more than deserving of a place in Filipino homes and hearts. The Aspin's unique characteristics make them stand out among other dog breeds. Typically medium-sized, Aspins have a sturdy build and short coats that come in various colors, such as brown, black, white, or brindle. Known for their high intelligence, they are incredibly street-smart, a trait honed by generations of surviving independently on the streets. Despite their independent nature, Aspins are gentle and loyal companions, often forming deep bonds with their owners and being protective of their families. One of the Aspin's most remarkable qualities is its low-maintenance nature. Aspins are healthy dogs with few genetic health issues, thanks to their natural breeding process, which avoids the inbreeding that plagues many purebred dogs. They are also highly adaptable, thriving in both urban and rural settings. Aspins require minimal grooming and exercise, making them the perfect pets for Filipinos living in apartments or homes with small spaces. Moreover, Aspins have been recognized for their bravery and contributions to society. For instance, the Philippine Army has utilized Aspins in various tasks, and some have been honored for their heroic deeds. In 2016, an Aspin named Roy gained national recognition for his role in a search and retrieval mission following a landslide. Stories like these underscore the significant impact Aspins can have, not just as pets but as working dogs serving the community. Speaking to Expat Media, Cebu-based veterinarian Eric James Nacorda emphasized the adaptability of Aspins to the Philippine environment, contrasting them with foreign dog breeds such as Huskies and Chow Chows. He highlighted how local dogs are naturally equipped to thrive in the country’s climate, while many imported breeds struggle in the heat. Nacorda also addressed a concerning societal trend: “Society has planted into the minds of people what dog or cat breed signifies a status-based morale. Aspins are left out on the streets and in shelters because a full-bred dog is more desirable for many people." This preference for purebreds, according to him, is rooted in a skewed perception of status and aesthetics, leading to the neglect of native breeds like Aspins. The Balay Dako incident further brings into question the biases that exist within the pet-loving community. Nacorda observed, "With the incident in Balay Dako, we have to understand what type of people judged the dogs—was it an animal lover or was it a Pedigree lover?" The veterinarian’s insight challenges the notion of favoritism toward purebred dogs and calls for a more inclusive understanding of pet ownership. To counteract the issue of breed discrimination and overbreeding, Nacorda stressed the importance of spay and neuter programs. “For me, the best way to move forward is to strictly implement spay and neuter to stop unwanted breedings of dogs and cats in the household and streets. This will also help us stop breeding animals for aesthetic purposes,” he said. Nacorda further noted that while many people can afford to buy expensive dogs, "only a handful of them can afford the veterinary care they need." The recent Balay Dako incident has reignited public discourse about the need to elevate the status of Aspins. While the restaurant later apologized and promised to review its pet policies, the episode exposed how some people still undervalue native dogs. The controversy also caught the attention of actress and animal advocate Heart Evangelista, who invited Yoda to tea with her own Aspin, Panda, in a show of solidarity for the breed. Evangelista, who rescued Panda in 2015, has been a vocal supporter of Aspins and uses her platform to raise awareness about animal welfare in the Philippines. For Filipinos, the Aspin is more than just a street dog. It symbolizes resilience, adaptability, and an unbreakable bond with the Filipino people. Aspins have earned their place not only in Filipino homes but also in the national consciousness, representing the rich cultural heritage and enduring spirit of the Philippines. In the face of breed discrimination and misconceptions, Filipinos should take pride in the Aspin's unique characteristics and their significant role in Filipino society. PIA/ICA/Expat Media
