Filipino child who swallowed magnetic beads saved in Abu Dhabi

  DUBAI – A six-year-old Filipino child who swallowed magnetic beads was saved following a surgery at a hospital in Abu Dhabi. Althea Faye Barbacina initially didn’t tell her parents she swallowed the object, but was already vomiting and experiencing severe abdominal pain that she was rushed to Medeor Hospital. “When the doctors informed us that she had swallowed magnets, we were terrified,” her father, Elmer, said. It is believed that Althea accidentally swallowed the beads while playing at home a week before her symptoms appeared. An X-ray image showed that the magnetic beads had wrapped around her intestines, blocking tissue and resulting in injuries. If left untreated, it could have led to blood poisoning and death. Specialist paediatrician Dr Jamuna Raghuraman said, “We found the presence of a metallic substance in the form of a string of beads in the CT scan. But initially, Althea didn’t confirm swallowing anything. Maybe out of fear.” Althea underwent an hour-long operation to remove the beads from her stomach.
