Dubai Design Week visitors can catch “Tbaba,” a wind-powered art installation by Emirati artist Roudhah Al Mazrouei and Filipino artist Gerald Jason Cruz. Visitors have praised the Tbaba installation at Dubai Design District for its unique blend of tradition and innovation. The artists say the installation, a tribute to Gulf maritime history and Filipino artistry, serves as a reminder of the UAE's vibrant cultural tapestry, celebrating both Emirati history and the contributions of expatriates. The installation, on display until Sunday (November 10), uses a striking red fabric that represents the traditional cloth used in pearl diving, symbolizing the Gulf’s historic pearl diving industry. Roudhah Al Mazrouei explained, "Pearl diving was crucial to the Gulf's economy before its rapid development. This installation helps preserve a piece of that history.” Tbaba is not just a static display; it harnesses wind to bring movement to the red cloth, drawing parallels to the fluidity of the sea. "Our aim is to blend historical elements with modern design principles, creating a piece that resonates with both Emirati and Filipino identities," Cruz said. Al Mazrouei and Cruz, both alumni of New York University Abu Dhabi, have been collaborating on projects since 2021. Their work has previously received accolades, including the 2022 Christo and Jeanne-Claude Award for their sculpture “Urban Fabric” and the 2021 Abu Dhabi Art Pavilion Prize for “Impermanence.” ICA/Expat MediaFor all the latest news from the UAE and the world, follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram and subscribe to our YouTube page
