  DUBAI – Philippine Ambassador to the UAE Hjayceelyn Quintana praised Filipino nurses and frontliners in the UAE’s largest Covid-19 vaccine testing site in Abu Dhabi. “They are seriously doing a good job, doing everything by the book to ensure that the outcome would have high level of integrity,” Quintana told Expatmedia.net. The Philippine ambassador recently visited the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC) where clinical trials for a potential vaccine are being conducted by Group 42 Healthcare. The mission site is currently the largest of its kind in the world. Quintana was welcomed by Waleed Zaher, Chief Research Officer, and his team, and had met Filipino volunteers and nurses at the site. More than 15,000 people, including hundreds of Filipinos, have volunteered for the clinical trial of the inactive vaccine in the UAE. The Covid-19 vaccine was developed by China-based pharmaceutical company Sinopharm. There are nearly 200 Filipino nurses in the ADNEC site who are involved in administering the clinical trials. “Most of them have worked in this field for more than five years. I was telling Dr. Zaher that they had work experience from very good institutions in the Philippines and are well trained. Dr. Zaher was all praises for them,” Quintana told Expatmedia.net after speaking to Filipino nurses leading the teams in the trials. Her visit reportedly boosted the morale of the Filipino healthcare workers there. Quintana also praised the operation at ADNEC. “The operation is very orderly, organized and well-funded,” she said. The mission in Abu Dhabi is the world’s first WHO-enlisted global clinical Phase 3 trials of a Covid-19 inactivated vaccine. Sheikh Abdullah bin Mohammed Al Hamed, Chairman of the Department of Health, Abu Dhabi, was the first individual to be administered the inactivated vaccine for Covid-19. The trials are being operated by health practitioners from Abu Dhabi Health Services Company (SEHA) who are operating facilities at five of their sites in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain in addition to a mobile clinic to ensure the trials are readily accessible to volunteers participating in the programme. The UAE was the preferred choice to conduct the clinical trials for the inactive Covid-19 vaccine because of its demographic heterogeneity, allowing for robust research across multiple ethnicities and increasing its feasibility for global application on the success of the trials.
