“I will endure this.” That was the last thing Filipino worker Jovito Quinio Jr reportedly told his sister in a phone call from a Saudi jail. Quino has reportedly committed suicide inside his jail cell at an undisclosed place in the kingdom. The 26-year-old was arrested in Riyadh in October 2015 over alleged terrorism links. His sister, Jenny, told dzMM she does not believe he killed himself as he had sounded determined during their last telephone conversation. Saudi authorities had sent her an email informing her of her brother’s death. "Sabi niya, 'Hindi ako sinasaktan. Kaya ko dito, kakayanin ko,'" she said. (He said, ‘I am not being hurt. I can endure it here, I can endure this.’”). Quino also told her he was not aware where he was being detained. "Sabi niya lang po na nakakulong siya sa isang kwarto, nag-iisa, parang bartolina," Jenny said. (He just said he was being detained in a room, like a dungeon, by himself). The Department of Foreign Affairs is seeking confirmation of the reported suicide, with Philippine ambassador to Saudi Arabia Ezzedin Tago saying he has sent a diplomatic note to the Riyadh Ministry of Foreign Affairs asking for confirmation of the incident and a medical report on Quino.
