Filipino ship captain Roybel Tabobo has returned home a hero after leading the dramatic rescue of nine seafarers from a sinking container ship off the coast of India. Tabobo, captain of the MV Han Yi, was among the first to respond to a distress call from MSC ELSA 3, which was taking in water and eventually sank near Kochi, Kerala, on May 25. The vessel reportedly suffered catastrophic flooding in its cargo holds, causing it to capsize. Upon his return to the Philippines last week, Tabobo received a hero’s welcome from the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW), led by Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac. “We salute Captain Tabobo’s heroism (which) embodies the Filipino spirit of our seafarers — selfless, decisive, and always ready to help one another in times of crisis,” Cacdac said in a statement. The DMW underscored how the incident once again showcased the excellence and compassion of Filipino seafarers, long praised for their maritime skill and bravery. The MV Han Yi rescued nine Filipino crew members, while the Indian Coast Guard rescued the remaining 11, bringing all 20 crew members to safety. Adding a personal triumph to his homecoming, Tabobo announced he is getting married this June. “This is truly a double celebration for Captain Tabobo — coming home as a hero and starting a new chapter in life,” Cacdac said, adding that a formal recognition ceremony will be held in his honor.
