Filipino students to undergo tuberculosis screening

  CEBU CITY – More than 500 students at a school in Cebu, Philippines will undergo tuberculosis screening in a pilot campaign by the Department of Health in Centreal Visayas (DOH-7). Dr. Sharon Laurel said that 537 students from Grade 7 to 10 at the Tangke National High School will undergo the mass tuberculosis screening this month. Laurel said that based on data, tuberculosis cases are prevalent in Tangke, a village in Talisay City, Cebu. She said that the case may prompt the Department of Education (DepEd) to conduct a mandatory screening for children for early detection and treatment of tuberculosis. Laurel explained that there is a low chance of TV prevalence among this age group but they wanted to make sure that these children are protected. Laurel admitted that there is an increase of tuberculosis cases from 2014 compared to the year 2015. There were 15,868 cases recorded in Central Visayas for 2014 compared to the 18,732 cases for 2015. The said the figures also reveal a rise in the number of people who have sought check-up and medication. She advised people suffering from two weeks of cough to consult their physicians. Laurel said that DOH-7 is also conducting tuberculosis screenings in city jails for detection and early treatment of those afflicted with the disease. They have conducted the first mass screening at the male dormitory of the Cebu City Jail last March where 21 percent of inmates tested positive of tuberculosis.
