  SAN FRANCISO – A Filipino-American targeted by his racist neighbour for stenciling in chalk a Black lives Matters sign on his property revealed it wasn’t the first he faced prejudice. “This isn’t the first time I’ve experienced fear or even loathing that just kind of creeps out,” James Juanillo told KPIX. Juanillo had posted a viral video of his neighbour, Lisa Alexander, questioning him whether he owned the property in the luxury neighbourhood in San Francisco and accusing him of vandalism after he stenciled a Black Lives matters sign onto the wall of his home. Alexander said she knew the owner of the property, unaware that it belonged to Juanillo, a long-time resident of the posh neighbourhood of Pacific Heights, and reported him to the police. Fortunately, Juanillo did not face a confrontational situation with the police, who knew him as a resident in the area for nearly 20 years. “The police came and recognized me immediately as a resident of the house and left without getting out of their patrol car,” Juanillo told ABC7.

Alexander, the CEO of skincare company La Face, has since publicly apologized for her actions, but continues to face backlash for “white privilege”. At least one company has cut ties with her skincare line, while wealth management firm Raymond James also fired her partner, Robert Larkins, who also featured in the viral video. “There are not enough words to describe how truly sorry I am for being disrespectful to him last Tuesday when I made the decision to question him about what he was doing in front of his home,” Alexander wrote in the statement. “I should have minded my own business.” La Face's website has been taken offline while Alexander's Twitter account has been deleted. Juanillo told KPIX that he would be willing to accept Alexander’s apology if she would come to his house and “talk to me like an equal.” However, he said that her initial behaviour was still problematic, because she immediately didn’t believe that someone like him could live in Pacific Heights. Alexander had lamented the damage caused by her actions. “The last 48 hours have taught me that my actions were those of someone who is not aware of the damage caused by being ignorant and naive to racial inequalities,” wrote Alexander. “I did not realize at the time that my actions were racist and have learned a painful lesson.” NNC/Expat Media
