Filipino teacher arrested for P50 million bounty offer for Duterte’s death

  MANILA – A 25-year-old public school teacher has been arrested after posting on Twitter a bounty of P50 million for the death of Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte. The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) identified the suspect as Ronnel Mas. On May 5, Mas had posted on Twitter that he will offer the reward to anyone who could kill Duterte. He later admitted he made the post to gain publicity. "I will give P50 million reward kung sino makakapatay kay Duterte," Mas said in his tweet. NBI Deputy Director Ferdinand Lavin said Mas will be charged with inciting sedition in relation to the anti-cybercrime law. The social studies teacher at Talal National High School will also be charged with violation of the Code of the Conduct and Ethical Standards for Public Officials. As he was arrested and handcuffed, an emotional Mas was seen on video crying for forgiveness over his controversial tweet. His father also spoke to media to appeal to Duterte to forgive his son. Operatives were able to track down Mas and arrest him in Barangay Poblacion North in Sta. Cruz, Zambales, the NBI said in a press statement. NBI Director Eric Distor said the NBI is "serious in carrying out its mandate to pursue cases involving threats to security or assaults against the person of the President as well as of the Vice President, Senate President, Speaker of the House of Representatives and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court," pursuant to the NBI Reorganization and Modernization Act. When asked for comment, Duterte’s spokesperson Harry Roque said the government is leaving it to the authorities to decide on the matter.
