Philippines rules men and women's triathlon at the regional games in Kuala Lumpur

  KUALA LUMPUR – Female triathlete Kim Mangrobang of the Philippines won the gold at the women's triathlon while fellow Filipino Nikko Huelgas ruled the men's division in the ongoing Southeast Asian (SEA) Games at the Malaysian capital. Except for the placements, the gold and silver finish by the female triathletes was a repeat of the 2015 finishes. At the 2015 games held in Singapore, Mangrobang placed second to Claire Adorna, who took the silver in this year's edition. Mangrobang crossed the finish line after 2:11:14 while Adorna checked in at 2:18:58. Huelgas, for his part, checked in after 1:59:21 to clinch the gold for the second consecutive SEA Games while John Chicano came in second with a time of 2:01:26. Mangrobang and Adorna were well ahead of their competitors in the women's triathlon. Mangrobang said in a Spin.ph interview that she and Adorna came up with a strategy to ensure a 1-2 finish for the Philippines by making sure they both led the pack in the bike and swim stages of the event and then left it to each other to compete for first place as they ran toward the finish line. Meanwhile, Huelgas led in the bike stage after emerging from the water in fifth place. Chicano outran a Singaporean competitor at the run stage to get the silver medal.
