DUBAI – A 23-man crew onboard a vessel seized by Iran arrived in Dubai on Saturday (September 28) for medical checks before they will return home following their 10-week ordeal.
British-flagged Stena Impero was held off the Iranian port of Bandar Abbas for more than two months over alleged marine violations. Iran claimed the oil tanker collided with a fishing boat. The ship is now anchored off Port Rashid in Dubai.
Iran freed seven of the ship’s crew earlier this month. Sixteen crew members that remained onboard included a Filipino, 13 Indians and two Russians. The names of the crew members were not released to the public.
“The master has reported all crew members are safe and in high spirits following their release,” said Erik Hanell, president and chief executive of Stena Bulk, owner of the vessel.
Hanell said the crew will receive medical checks and debriefing, and that arrangements have been made to support their recovery and for them to return directly to their families.
“Stena Bulk and Northern Marine Management would like to take this opportunity to praise the crew for their professionalism in the handling of this difficult and stressful situation,” he said.
Hanell also thanked authorities for their assistance in securing the vessel’s release: “In particular we would like to recognise the efforts of the Swedish Foreign Ministry throughout this incident and also the support from various UK Government departments, co-ordinated by the Department for Transport’s maritime division. We are grateful for the consular visits on board from the embassies of India, Russia, Latvia and the Philippines,” he said.
