Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) in the UAE will continue to enjoy free remittance when sending money to the Philippines, even though Emirates NBD will begin charging fees on most international transfers starting September 1. Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac confirmed the bank notified clients of a fixed Dh26.25 fee (inclusive of VAT) on cross-border transactions through its DirectRemit service—but assured that the Philippines is among six exempt countries, alongside India, Pakistan, Egypt, Sri Lanka, and the UK. “We deeply appreciate Emirates NBD for preserving fee free transfers to the Philippines even as they introduce fees for other destinations. This is a clear sign of their understanding of how essential these remittances are for Filipino households,” Cacdac said. With approximately 700,000 Filipinos residing in the UAE, and about 600,000 of whom are OFWs, per Philippine Statistics Authority, this exemption ensures families in the Philippines continue to receive financial support without additional cost. Cacdac also expressed gratitude to the UAE Government and the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation for fostering policies that support migrant workers. “Their cooperation ensures that OFWs can continue sending financial support to their loved ones without additional costs,” he added.
