Fire breaks out at Dubai Expo 2020 site

DUBAI – Fire broke out at the Dubai Expo 2020 site on Monday (May 11), according to a spokesperson of Expo 2020. The fire broke out during a welding operation at the site and was quickly brought under control, according to the spokesperson. A Dubai Civil Defence official also confirmed that a problem with welding works sparked the fire. A thick plume of smoke could be seen billowing from the site on Monday morning as firefighters battled to control the blaze. No one was injured in the fire. Construction is underway at the Expo 2020 site at Dubai South District ahead of the opening of Expo 2020, which has been postponed to next year after participating countries asked for consideration due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Expo 2020 is now scheduled to run from October 1, 2021 until March 31, 2022. It will still retain the title Expo 2020. There are 69 country pavilions in various stages of construction at the site. Expatmedia.net, as part of Expo 2020’s accredited media, was given a preview tour of the site in October last year on what was to mark exactly one year before its opening. When complete, the Expo 2020 site will feature three themed districts: Sustainability, Mobility and Opportunity.
