Statistics presented during Civil Defense conference

  SHARJAH – The number of fires that hit this emirate last year decreased by more than 30 percent compared to fires that occurred in 2015, according to Sharjah's records. Official records also showed that seven people were killed in the fire incidents and 60 others were injured. Among those hurt were five firemen. According to the emirate's statistics, the number of fires that occurred in Sharjah dropped by 38.4 percent. The report was presented during the Sharjah Civil Defense conference where it also showed improvements in Sharjah's firefighting capabilities. Col. Sami Khamis Al Naqbi, director-general of Sharjah Civil Defense office, revealed that among the steps taken to reduce fires in the emirate was linking all commercial and industrial establistments across the UAE to the Civil Defense operations room." "The automatic alerts will also show the location of the fire," he said. "We are working to reduce the response time in line with international standards. The response time in 2016 reached 7.4 minutes whle the target was 5.5 minutes," Al Naqbi pointed out. Meanwhile, the civil defense office of the emirate conducted the conference with strategic partners to formulate steps on improving coordination with them in relation to initiatives during the commemoration of the Year of Giving.
