Flood-hit Pakistan faces food crisis as vegetable prices skyrocket

After widespread flooding in Pakistan ruined crops and interrupted supplies, fruit and vegetable prices skyrocketed. At least 1,100 people have been killed by flash floods across the country, making this the worst flooding in three decades. The country's planning minister warned on Monday that repairs to damaged homes and infrastructure might cost more than $10 billion. The extent of the damage to the country's primary industry of agriculture has not been determined. In the eastern city of Lahore, close to the border with India and far from the worst floods in Sindh province, the prices of some vegetables have tripled. The Pakistani government sets prices for some fresh produce — but traders often ignore them. "Last week, I sold onions for 90 rupees a kilogram and today the government price is 300 per kg," said vegetable seller Ahmad Ali. According to Malik Awan, a vendor at Lahore's fruit and vegetable market, "The supply of vegetables and fruit to Lahore is getting lower day by day because of the flood, rains and destruction to roads." Officials said that more than 800,000 hectares of agricultural land had been flooded, destroying most standing crops and preventing farmers from planting anew. More than 20% of Pakistan's GDP comes from agriculture, and up to 40% of the population works in this field, creating around $80 billion in goods annually. On Wednesday, Naveed Qamar, the minister of commerce, announced that negotiations were nearing a conclusion allowing importing of vegetables and other food products from Iran and Afghanistan.
