Nine people including 2 kids and an elderly woman got trapped in a rip current

  PANAMA BEACH, Florida – At least 80 people formed a human chain to rescue nine persons, including two children and an elderly woman, from being taken out to sea after being trapped in a rip current. The nine people and all those who formed the human link made it back to shore. A rip current is a relatively strong, narrow current flowing outward from the beach through the surf zone and poses a hazard to swimmers. It is prevalent along the East, West and Gulf coasts of the US as well as along the shores of the Great Lakes. Roberta Ursrey told CNN affiliate WJHG that she and her family were at Panama City Beach on Saturday and noticed that she could not see her two sons from the shore. After awhile, she spotted her two boys – aged 8 and 11 – crying out for help. Roberta and the other members of the Ursrey family ran out to sea to save the boys but they too were trapped in the current. Bystanders who swam out to sea to save the Ursrey family were also overpowered by the current and all nine of them, including the Ursrey family, began waving their arms and shouting for help. A witness, Rosalind Beckton, told CNN it was then that she saw people start forming a human chain, stretching out to reach the trapped group. Jessica Simmons, who was one of the bystanders who formed the chain, said in a Facebook post that they used boogie boards and surfboards to help the Ursrey family and the others return to land.
