Imagine traveling from Abu Dhabi to Dubai in just 30 minutes. This futuristic vision is closer to becoming a reality after Joby Aviation, a leader in flying taxi technology, applied for certification to operate commercial air transport in the UAE. If approved, Joby plans to launch its electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) air taxi service as early as 2025. The US-based firm announced its progress on Tuesday (September 10), marking a significant milestone in the UAE’s ambition to lead in advanced air mobility. Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, director general of the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), hailed the development as a step towards making the country a global leader in eVTOL operations. Joby Aviation’s application for certification follows its earlier agreement with the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) to bring all-electric air taxis to the emirate. The company has also signed a multilateral MoU with Abu Dhabi entities, including the Department of Municipalities and Transport and the Department of Culture and Tourism. Joby is expected to undergo a five-stage certification process, which involves developing operating manuals, inspections, and training for pilots and aircraft mechanics. The Santa Cruz-based company already has the US Federal Aviation Administration’s approval to test its flying taxis. With a maximum speed of 322km/h, Joby's air taxis could revolutionize urban transportation. The journey from Abu Dhabi to Dubai, which typically takes two hours by car during rush hour, could be reduced to a mere 30 minutes, offering a fast and eco-friendly alternative to road travel. The UAE’s efforts to foster advanced air mobility also extend to other players in the eVTOL space.
