Former world’s heaviest woman Eman Abd El Aty dies

  DUBAI – The world’s former heaviest woman, Eman Abd El Aty, died on Monday (September 25), her doctors in Abu Dhabi told media. Efforts are currently underway to have her body repatriated to Egypt as soon as possible. El Aty, 36, died from complications of a rare thyroid condition that caused her to gain excessive weight reaching 500kg. The Egyptian was receiving rehabilitation treatment in the capital’s Burjeel Hospital, with a team of 20 healthcare staff assigned to her case. However, her rare condition led to complications that damaged her heart, kidney and respiratory organs, doctors said. Her health started deteriorating on Friday. On Monday, she died at 4:35am, with her sister in the hospital room. El Aty previously underwent extensive bariatric surgery at a Mumbai hospital, which helped her shed about 300kg. The hospital had reportedly used her case to gain media popularity, sparking a row that led her family to transfer her in May to Burjeel Hospital in Abu Dhabi through a specially chartered flight. Doctors were planning more operations this year and aimed to reduce her weight to less than 100kg.
