Death sentence sought for Dubai editor over wife's murder

  DUBAI - A gardener is among key witnesses who will testify in the case of a British newspaper editor accused of killing his wife with a hammer. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty for Francis Mathew, 61, who is accused of hitting his wife, Jane, with a hammer to the head that caused her death on July 4. Mathew has denied intentionally killing his wife, saying that a marital dispute led to the attack at their home in Umm Suqueim. The couple's gardener had told investigators that he saw Mathew leave the villa on the morning after the murder, and that the Gulf News editor appeared "calm" and even talked to him about the weather. Policemen said that when they arrived in the villa, Mathew told them that he left for work at about 8am and returned home at 5pm to find his wife already dead. Police said they found drops of blood in the corridor leading to the bedroom where Jane's body was found lying in a pool of blood. She had a severe wound on the head, police said. Police also said that the victim was undressed and her belongings were scattered in the room. A safe was also found on the floor, which Mathew claimed was knocked over by thieves. “It was quite clear that the place had been turned upside down purposely. The husband was taken in for questioning as he was the primary suspect. Initially, he denied his involvement but further investigation revealed that he had killed her,” a police lieutenant said. The hearing on Wednesday was adjourned to allow prosecution witnesses to give their testimonies.
