Roach to tell Pacquiao: It's time to retire

  MANILA – Manny Pacquiao's long-time trainer Freddie Roach said he will talk to the Filipino boxer-senator "about calling it a day." Roach believes that Pacquiao's controversial defeat to Australian fighting schoolteacher Jeff Horn is a sign that the Filipino boxer cannot juggle his responsibilities as a senator and competing in the boxing arena. "I'm going to talk to Manny about maybe calling it a day, maybe this is it," Roach told the Philippine Daily Inquirer. In a separate interview by ABS-CBN, Roach said retirement is now an option for Pacquiao. "I'm going to watch the tape and talk to Manny about it. We will have a discussion about that, yes. Being a senator, and being a fighter, it's really hard," he also said. Pacquiao briefly retired from the sport last year. He returned to boxing to fight Jessie Vargas in November last year. Pacquiao beat Vargas to capture the WBO welterweight title. Prior to the so-called Battle of Brisbane, Roach had said he will urge Pacquiao to retire if he loses to the Australian boxer, adding that a lot is at stake in the fight. A win for Pacquiao would have upped his chances of getting a rematch against Floyd Mayweather Jr. after losing to the undefeated American boxer in 2015. Even Pacquiao's wife, Jinkee, believes that her husband should retire already. "He's not getting any younger," she told ABS-CBN. Manny is 38 years old. Three-time boxing champion Jeff Fenech also called for Pacquiao to retire. "He should go relax and enjoy the money he has made. He's got nothing to prove," said Fenech in an Inquirer report. But Pacquiao won't have none of it. He said he would "absolutely" return to Brisbane for a rematch, which is provided in his contract to fight Horn. Even if the statistics of the match showed Pacquiao having landed the most jabs and punches on the unheralded 28-year-old Horn, the three judges – Waleska Roldan of the US, Chris Flores of the US and Ramon Cerdan of Argentina – scored the fight 117-111, 115-113 and 115-113, respectively. Roach has called for an investigation of Roldan's scoring as she only gave Pacquiao three of the 12 rounds even if Horn was badly bruised in the fight. Meanwhile, Pacquiao has returned to the Philippines and was given military honors after his chartered Air Asia plane landed at the General Santos International Airport.
