24-year-old Iris Mittenaere becomes 2nd French woman to win beauty title after 64 years

  MANILA – Miss France Iris Mittenaere beat 85 other contestants from around the world to become Miss Universe at the end of the three-hour pageant held at the Mall of Asia Arena in the Philippines on Monday morning. Mittenaere, 24, a dentistry student from Lille, France, is the second French woman to win as Miss Universe after Christiane Martel in 1953. It has also been 26 years since a European woman was crowned Miss Universe - the last being Mona Grudt of Norway in 1990. Mittenaere's runners-up were Raquel Pelissier of Haiti and Colombia's Andrea Tovar. Maxine Medina, representative of the Philippines – the host country, reached the top six. During the final round of question and answer for the top three, the question that was asked of them was "Name something over the course of your life that you failed at and tell us what you learned from that experience." Mittenaere, speaking through an interpreter, replied: "I've failed several times in my life. I thought I failed the first time I went out on a casting because my name wasn't on the list, and the very next day I found that I was in a new book. So, I think that when you fail, you have to be elevated, and you have to try again and keep going. If tonight, I'm not one of the winners, I would still have had the great honour of being one of the three finalists. So, I think that I have failed before, but for me this is a great first opportunity." As Miss Universe, Mittenaere will be based in New York during her reign and aside from the DIC crown worth thousands of dollars and title, she will also be receiving a monthly salary from the Miss Universe Organization, personal appearance wardrobe, among other prizes. Mittenaere said in a press conference after the pageant that dental and oral health will be her main advocacy. The other candidates were entered the semifinals were from Kenya, Indonesia, USA, Mexico, Peru, Panama, Canada, Brazil and Thailand. The pageant was emceed by Steve Harvey with model Ashley Graham as backstage host. The performers were American rapper Flo Rida and R&B group Boyz II Men. Meanwhile, 2015 Miss Universe Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach of the Philippines will still be working for WME/IMG - owner of the Miss Universe pageant - after her reign as she revealed during the pageant that she has signed a contract with the firm.
