Ed Sheeran's cameo merits jokes; critic says singer's appearance was not needed

  LOS ANGELES - The season seven premiere of HBO's hugely popular and highly-acclaimed medieval fantasy series "Game of Thrones" attracted a record 16.1 million viewers on Sunday, the network announced on Monday. HBO said the number of viewers recorded on Sunday was 50 percent more than those who watched the premiere of season 6 on April 24 last year, giving the first episode of season seven titled "Dragonstone" the distinction of being the most-watched premiere night in HBO history. According to the network, the 16.1 million viewers were composed of 10.1 million who watched the premiere on Sunday night; viewers who watched the two replays at 10 p.m. and at midnight; and those streamed the show with the HBO Go and HBO Now apps. The 10.1 million record was a 27 percent increase from last year, HBO added. HBO said Sunday's premiere had "the highest number of concurrent viewers" across the cable network's streaming services. CNN said "Dragonstone" received positive reviews. CNN critic Brian Lowry said the premiere episode "exhibited a sense of urgency and purpose that past openers have sometimes lacked." "Despite the weighty expectations placed upon it, 'Game of Thrones' has consistently risen to the challenge. If the season premiere is any indication of what's ahead, this season's arc is likely to again demonstrate that when it comes to lording over the TV universe, this one-for-the-ages drama is no pretender," Lowry said. Meanwhile, Ed Sheeran's cameo on the season seven premiere merited a lot of jokes and scathing remarks from netizens. Lowry, for his part, opined that Sheeran's appearance wasn't necessary. Sheeran temporarily deleted his Twitter account on Monday night but did not explain why, prompting speculations that the move was because of the trolling he got from his "Game of Thrones" appearance. His account is back up again. Sheeran was among a group of soldiers Arya Stark encounters along the way to her home after killing people. Sheeran was singing a tune taken from the "Game of Thrones" book when Arya arrived. Sheeran then offered cooked rabbit to Arya and didn't say much after that. Twitter user Dana Schwartz said "Nothing takes me out of a fantasy world like a random Ed Sheeran appearance" while Lowry commented that Sheeran's cameo was "the kind of stunt to which the series needn't resort."
