A group of 11 women working as garbage collectors in Kerala are now multi-millionaires after winning Rs100 million (Dh4.47 million) in the Monsoon Bumper draw. The draw was held on Wednesday (July 26), which saw their ticket number MB 200261 win the jackpot. They will be sharing the prize among them. The women, members of the Haritha Karma Sena under the Parappanangadi Municipality, pooled their money to buy the Rs250 (Dh11) ticket. One of the women, 72-year-old Malu, said she almost missed her group’s big win if not for her friend loaning her cash to add to their money pool. The group has been buying tickets to draws during special occasions, and once won a Rs1,000 prize. This was their fourth time to buy a Monsoon Bumper ticket. The women earn an average of Rs250 per day from collecting non-biodegradable waste from houses and establishments. The items are shredded for recycling. The women said will be using their big win to pay off their loans for their children’s education, as well as their personal needs. Baby, a 62-year-old group member, said she will also be using the money that she won to build a new house after her home was destroyed in a big flood. ICA/Expat Media
