Eleven Indian nationals were found dead in a restaurant in Gudauri, a mountain resort in Georgia, authorities confirmed. The victims, all employees of the same Indian restaurant, were discovered in their sleeping quarters on the establishment’s second floor on Saturday (December 14). Preliminary investigations by Georgia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs indicate carbon monoxide poisoning as the likely cause of death. There were no signs of external injuries or violence, officials confirmed. The lethal gas is suspected to have leaked from a power generator installed in an enclosed indoor area near the bedrooms. Local media reported that the generator was activated following a power outage on Friday evening. The restaurant’s owners reportedly installed the generator indoors without adequate ventilation, a practice that experts warn can lead to fatal carbon monoxide buildup. The Indian Embassy in Tbilisi expressed its condolences in a statement, saying, “The Embassy of India in Tbilisi is saddened to learn of the unfortunate passing of 11 Indian nationals in Gudauri, Georgia, and extends its deepest condolences to their families. The Embassy is working closely with local authorities to facilitate the prompt repatriation of the mortal remains to India. We are also in contact with the bereaved families and are committed to providing all possible support.” The incident has sent shockwaves through the Indian diaspora in Georgia and beyond. In India, the families of the deceased are in mourning, awaiting the return of their loved ones’ remains. The Embassy of India has assured them of expedited support, and arrangements are underway for the repatriation process.
