Ghanaians sleeping in Satwa park get help amid Covid-19 crisis

DUBAI – Scores of Ghana nationals who have been sleeping in a park in Dubai’s Satwa were given accommodation in Al Quoz on Wednesday (June 3). The group of jobless and visit visa holders have been sleeping in the searing heat after they could no longer pay for their living expenses in the UAE. Residents had taken to social media to call awareness to the group’s plight and to encourage people to send food aid. Mark (full name withheld) said his heart was “broken” after seeing the group “sleeping rough in a park the temperatures are 38+”. On Wednesday, 77 men and three women were moved to the accommodation in Al Qouz. Another seven women were given separate housing. UAE-based Dar Al Ber Society had arranged for their accommodation, and also set up a donation drive to help buy their plane tickets and food supplies. Juhi Khan of Dar Al Ber said the charity had handed out food and drinks to the group as soon as they heard about their plight this week. “We are now trying to help arrange tickets for these people through our Zayed Happiness Caravan initiative as many wish to go back to their home countries to be with family,” Khan said. According to the Ghana Consulate in Dubai, more than 450 nationals have registered for repatriation and are expected to be flown home later this month. ICA/Expat Media
