Filipinos loses to perennial rivals South Koreans, will play in classification round

  BEIRUT – After consecutive victories in the group phase of the 2017 FIBA Asia Cup, Gilas Pilipinas bowed out of contention after losing again to perennial tormentor South Korea, 118-86, in the quarterfinal round of the tournament in Lebanon on Wednesday (past midnight Thursday in Manila). It was Gilas' first loss in the tournament and fourth consecutive defeat to South Korea since the 2013 FIBA Asia Cup although the Philippines emerged as victor that year and went on to play at the FIBA World Cup in 2014. With the loss to South Korea, the Philippines will have to settle for the classification phase of the FIBA Asia Cup for the fifth to eighth positions. The Filipinos were no match to the South Koreans who had a strong start at the game and took a 26-18 lead over the Filipinos into the second quarter and matched Gilas' 31 points. The team from Seoul also had eight players score at least nine points each. While the first half of the game was marred by sloppy defense on the part of the Filipinos, Terrence Romeo was the bright light in the Philippine team as he dropped 22 points in the first half, courtesy of several three-pointers. It was after the halftime break that Gilas could no longer surmount the 24-point lead made by the South Koreans at the end of the third quarter. Credit also went to Filipino-German big man Christian Standhardinger who scored 17 points and four rebounds. Roger Pogoy and Jio Jalalon tried but failed to cut the lead of the South Koreans. Meanwhile, South Korea enters the semifinals and will face-off against who will win between Iran and Lebanon on Saturday while the loser will play against Gilas.
