Filipinos to play first game on Wednesday against defending champion China

  MANILA – Gilas Pilipinas has arrived in Beirut for the FIBA Asia Cup and will play their first game on Wednesday against defending champion China. The group phase of the tournament begins today (Tuesday). Gilas however faces rough sailing during the tournament with the absence of naturalized player Andray Blatche while center June Mar Fajardo is not expected to play with the team due to a calf injury. Blatche did not explain why he opted to skip the FIBA Asia Cup but earlier reports said he had concerns about security in Lebanon. Fajardo still join the Philippine team in Beirut just so Gilas won't pay a replacement fee costing between US$3,500 and US$7,000 depending on the "arbitrary scope of the tournament." Gilas coach Chot Reyes earlier said if Fajardo can play, that would be good. The injury to Fajardo, absence of Blatche and the fact that the players have rarely been complete in their preparation sessions (due to the PBA schedule conflicting with Gilas training) all seem to spell disaster and may be too much to overcome.
