Winter Olympian Michael Martinez places 2nd in inaugural skating event

  KUALA LUMPUR – Gilas Pilipinas prevailed against Indonesia at the 2017 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games to capture the gold over the weekend and prove once again that Filipinos are the kings when it comes to basketball in the region. The Indonesians put up a valiant fight but the Filipinos were just too much to overcome. The Philippines won against Indonesia, 94-55, in the finals of the men's basketball held at the MABA Stadium. The Philippines and Indonesia reached the finals undefeated in their respective groups. This is the 12th consecutive time that the Philippines has captured the men's basketball gold in the SEA Games. The quartet of Mike Tolomia, Kobe Paras, Raymar Jose and Filipino-German big man Christian Standhardinger worked together to steer the Philippines to a golden finish. Meanwhile, Winter Olympian Michael Martinez settled for the silver at the inaugural staging over the weekend of the figure skating event at the 2017 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Malaysia. This after Martinez fell in the middle of his routine in the free program. Martinez, who was the only Philippine athlete at the 2014 Winter Olympics, scored 171.63 points to land in second place to Malaysian skater Julian Zhi-Jie Yee, who had 205.43 points. Another Malaysian, Khai Xiang Chew, placed third (bronze) with 145.52 points. In the women's group, Filipina skater Alisson Perticheto got a bronze after garnering 113.40 as score.
