Philippines beats SEA Games host country Malaysia, 98-66
KUALA LUMPUR – It's a clean sweep of the preliminary matches for Gilas Pilipinas as the Philippine men's basketball team disposed of the team from 2017 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games host country Malaysia on Wednesday night, 98-66.
Gilas is the leader in Group A with three wins and no losses and will face the second placer of Group B – either Singapore or Vietnam – in the semifinals later tonight (Friday).
The Philippines fielded a team of cadets to the SEA Games as their elder counterparts played at the 16-nation FIBA Asia Cup in Lebanon where the Philippines placed seventh.
Kevin Ferrer and Malaysia's Kuek Tian Yuan got entangled in a fight at one point of the game, causing a minor commotion.
Also, Carl Bryan Cruz and Baser Amer were ejected from the court even if replays of the game showed they did nothing wrong to merit their eviction, prompting Gilas to play even harder against the Malaysians.
Filipino-German big man Christian Standhardinger contributed 18 points and scored 18 rebounds while Kobe Paras – son of erstwhile PBA star Benjie Paras – put in 16 points and eight rebounds.
Kiefer Ravena and Troy Rosario scored 12 points each.
