Indonesia, Thailand also win over foes in 2017 SEABA Championship in Manila

  MANILA – It was quite painful to watch Gilas Pilipinas defeat a hapless Myanmar at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City on the first day of the 2017 Southeast Asia Basketbal Association (SEABA) Championship. The Philippine team trounched hapless Myanmar, 147-40. This year's edition of the SEABA games saw the return of Myanmar in the tournament after a long absence. The last time Myanmar played in the SEABA was back in the early 1990s. Calvin Abueva and Jio Jalalon led Gilas to victory over Myanmar and the two are expected to do the same when the Filipinos play against Singapore tonight. On the other hand, Indonesia beat Singapore, 71-50. Timnas Basket, led by veteran player Mario Wuysang, took advantage of the Singaporeans' slow start to ultimately score a win against the players from the city state. Naturalized player Jamarr Johnson and Arki Wisnu failed to play for Indonesia last night due to eligibility issues. Meanwhile, Thailand struggled in the first half of their game against Malaysia but the Thais prevailed in the end with a score of 74-67. Chitchai Ananti, Patiphan Klahan and Nattakarn Muangboon did all they can to make their team and succeeded. The Filipinos, Indons and Thais are favored to defeat their respective rivals in tonight's Day 2 games. The SEABA Championship will run until May 18 and whoever wins at the end of the seven-day tournament will represent the sub-zone in the FIBA Asia Cup in Lebanon this August.
