Girl, 9, receives 'historic' kidney transplant in Dubai

  DUBAI – A nine-year-old Sudanese girl born with one kidney became the first child to receive a life-changing kidney transplant in Dubai. Bana Nizar Hassan underwent an operation at Al Jalila Children’s Speciality Hospital, in the first operation of its kind in Dubai. Hassan received the kidney from a deceased donor in Abu Dhabi. The organ was taken to Dubai and the surgery was performed in five hours. Hassan was born with a condition called renal agenesis, resulting in her having just one kidney. She was facing the possibility of dialysis before her successful kidney transplant. The girl’s father, Nizar Hassan Yousif, expressed gratefulness for a new lease of life for his daughter. “Bana’s first smile after the operation was the most precious moment in my life, and I would like to dedicate her first smile to our gracious donor and his family,” he said.
