Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) issued a fresh warning on Thursday (December 21), urging residents to avoid falling victim to phishing scams. “Always verify that links and sender’s addresses are official,” according to DEWA in an email sent to customers. The warning came after residents recently took to social media to complain about fake emails claiming they have a refund from DEWA. The fake email uses DEWA’s logo and states that the refund is worth Dh1,549.80. The email has been exposed to be a phishing attack designed to steal bank information when the reader clicks on the “Apply” button to claim the bogus refund. On Thursday, DEWA also warned about fraudulent calls, saying, "DEWA always uses a caller ID to contact you and will never ask for your password, personal information or credit card details during the call." This is not the first time that the utility provider has been the target of fraudsters using fake calls or emails that are designed to steal unsuspecting victims' banking details. DEWA has repeatedly urged customers to be cautious about unsolicited emails and social media messages amid a rise in phishing scams and ransomware attacks targeting UAE residents.
