Filipina grandma an internet hit, plus viral videos Pixar’s Out and Gianna Floyd’s ‘Daddy changed the world’

MANILA – Even though we’re facing difficulties right now due to the coronavirus pandemic, there are still positive happenings that we can look into to uplift ourselves and to remind us that better days are coming. I scrolled through the internet to bring you my top three picks of viral videos this week.

Grandma sells veggies to buy grandson dream smartphone

When there’s a will, there is truly a way. A grandmother who makes Dh200 (Dh14) per day selling vegetables was able to make her grandson’s wish come true after she bought him his dream smartphone. The story of Emma Abucay-Monta, 63, and her 12-year-old grandson, Kevin, emerged after they were caught on camera sharing a happy moment outside a mall in Muntinlupa, Philippines after finally buying the prized gadget. Delivery service rider John Mico Tan captured the most heartwarming joy of a child who just got his dream smartphone gifted to him by his grandmother. The photo has sparked thousands of messages from netizens who offered to help the family. Some people donated food and one person even offered to pay a year’s worth of internet for Kevin. Lola Emma makes a living selling leaves of gabi, a taro plant. Her meager earnings are only enough for her family’s daily needs, but the doting grandmother was determined to buy her grandson the phone he has always wanted. She saved up for it for two years. The smartphone cost her P2,500 but the happy moment she and her grandson shared after finally buying the phone was priceless. Lola Emma is happy knowing that her grandchild finally has a phone he can use especially now that the education system has shifted to online learning as a way to cope up to the “new normal” due to Covid-19. I truly admire how Lola Emma gives importance to the food that her family needs to eat and survive as well as the importance of education.

Gianna Floyd: ‘Daddy changed the world!’

“Daddy changed the world!” 6-year old Gianna Floyd said about her father, George Floyd. This nine-second video is just the sweetest yet the most heartbreaking thing I’ve seen. I think it’s really admirable how a child still manages to smile and think of the bigger picture. Despite losing her dad at an early age, she knows that he did not die in vain. She’s still smiling, knowing that her dad made a huge impact on the world and was able to touch the hearts of many people to start a movement demanding for an equal justice system and an end to racism.

Pixar’s ‘Out’ features Disney’s first animated gay characters

How very timely is it that “Out” was released before Pride Month? The nine-minute animated film by Pixar’s Steven Clay Hunter features a man named Greg who is trying to build up the courage to come out to his parents. “Out” is Pixar's and Disney’s first film that features animated gay characters as protagonists. I love how this film was able to deliver four topics: the importance of love, family, communication, and acceptance. Love knows no gender. Even if there are times you’re scared to connect and really communicate with your family, at the end of the day, you should remember that your parents will accept you for who you truly are because they are your family. Above all else, accept yourself. The moment you accept yourself, you are freed from the burden of needing others to accept you.   Daphne de Vera is a digital content creator from Manila, Philippines.
