Group wedding in Abu Dhabi saves Emiratis Dh683,000

DUBAI – More than a dozen grooms attended a mass wedding in Abu Dhabi on Thursday organized by the Crown Prince Court to ease debt burden among Emiratis. On Wednesday, the mass wedding kicked off in Al Bateen in Abu Dhabi, with 13 Emirati men joining the celebration. This is the sixth year that the Crown Prince Court organized mass weddings. Mohammed Al Suwaidi, one of 13 grooms, said his cousins and neighbours were among those who saved money by joining the mass wedding on Wednesday. According to a 2017 study by Zayed University, the average cost of an Emirati wedding is around Dh683,000, which is mostly paid for by the groom’s family. Al Suwaidi said it took him only two hours to prepare for his nuptials, and the only things he spent on were new clothes and a new pair of sandals for the occasion. Catering, entertainment and invitations were taken care of by the Crown Prince Court. In the UAE, the maximum dowry limit for Emiratis is Dh50,000. Out of the amount, Dh20,000 is paid in advance during marriage registration, while the Dh30,000 will be paid in case of divorce.
