They threaten to release 1.5TB of show, confidential data unless HBO pays ransom

  LOS ANGELES - Hackers have released the personal phone numbers of stars of the hit fantasy drama series "Game of Thrones" as well as emails and scripts of the cable channel's shows. In a five-minute video letter, the hackers, who called themselves as "Mr. Smith", demanded that HBO chief executive Richard Plepler pay a multimillion-dollar ransom in three days or they'd release whole HBO shows online and more emails with confidential company data. Along with the video, the hackers let out 3.4GB of files of technical data detailing HBO's internal network and administrator passwords, draft scripts from five Game of Thrones episodes, including the one shown early this week, and a month's worth of emails from Leslie Cohen, HBO's vice president for film programming. The hackers claimed to have stolen 1.5TB of data but HBO believes that its entire email system has been compromised but the company admitted the theft of "proprietary information". The company said it is investigating the hacking incident and is working with police and cybersecurity personnel. The hackers, meanwhile, said it took them six months to break into HBO's network and demanded a "six-month salary in bitcoin". The hackers also said they would only deal directly with "Richard", apparently referring to Plepler, and would only send one "letter" containing payment details. They claimed that they earn US$12 million to US$15 million a year from blackmailing organizations whose networks they have breached but did not identify those networks. The hackers said they spend US$500,000 a year buying so-called zero-day exploits so they'd break into networks through holes unknown to Microsoft and other software companies. Meanwhile, the more than 50 internal documents released by the hacker were labelled "confidential" with one document that appeared to have the confidential cast list for "Game of Thrones", listing personal telephone numbers and email addresses for actors Peter Dinklage, Lena Headey and Emilia Clarke. Also among the released documents was a spreadsheet of legal claims against the TV network, job offer letters to several top executives, slides about future technology plans, and a list of 37,977 emails called "Richard's Contact list". According to the hackers, HBO is their 17th target and that only three of their past targets have not paid ransom.
