Dried fish: Sharjah allocates land for drying fish
Fishermen can soon make their own dried fish out in the open in Sharjah after the ruler allocated land for drying fish. Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, directed the Khorfakkan Municipality to allocate a land in Al Owainat area for drying fish. Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad explained that he chose this plot of land because it is wide and suitable and away from the residential area to avoid fish odour. The beach site where fishermen can dry fish will come under the supervision of the Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq). The site for drying fish is located behind the Academy of Marine Sciences. Dried fish or sun-dried fish is common in Asia and countries like Iceland. Drying fish is a traditional way of preserving fish. It takes two to eight days to dry fish, depending on its size and species. When consumed, dried fish has a strong flavour and an overpowering smell.
