Hospital in Abu Dhabi closes amid cries of unpaid wages

DUBAI – A multi-specialty hospital in Abu Dhabi has shut down amid reports of mass resignation of its staff over unpaid wages. The Abu Dhabi Department of Health (DOH) confirmed the closure of the Universal Hospital, saying it shut down the facility following a request from the owner. According to the authority, patients at the hospital along Airport Road have been transferred to alternative hospitals to continue their treatment. A staff member, who wanted to remain anonymous, said staffers were not expecting to get paid for at least a few months but that a police case has been filed to recover their unpaid wages. Another hospital employee said that staff were hoping for an amicable settlement. Hospital officials could not be reached for comment as of this publication. Universal Hospital opened in 2013. This April, it was temporarily closed for failing to meet the DOH’s health and safety standards. It reopened on May 6 following “structural changes”.
