Many others injured; in one district alone there were 98 fatalities, according to reports

  DHAKA – Torrential rains that started early Monday and continued until yesterday caused several landslides in the southeastern part of Bangladesh, killing at least 133 people and injuring many others. Bangladesh relief and rehabilitation officer Biswanath Majumder told CNN that the highest number of fatalities was in Rangamati district where rescuers found 98 bodies buried in the mud. Majumder said 1,000 houses were damaged in Rangamati and rescuers feared that the death toll could go up as many of the residents were asleep when a wall of mud plowed through their homes on Monday night. Rescuers managed to pluck out 77 people from the mud and they were rushed to a district hospital. Reaz Ahmed, director general of the Department of Disaster Management said 29 died in Chittagong and six others perished in Bandarban district. The heavy rains from a depression in the Bay of Bengal flooded many districts in southeast Bangladesh, including Chittagong – the country's second largest city. Many parts of the metropolis were submerged in waist-deep floodwaters. Ahmed said an undetermined number of people were missing as rescue operations involving members of the Army, Fire Service, Civil Defense, the police and local volunteers continued until late last night. He also said they rescued about 2,300 people in Rangamati and Bandarban districts and brought them to temporary shelters. Meanwhile, two Army officers and two soldiers were also killed in the mudslides. A statement from the Army said Maj. Mohammad Fazlul Haque, Capt. Tanvir Salam Shanta, Cpl. Mohammad Azizul Haque and soldier Md Shahin Alam perished when a landslide occurred in an area where they were trying to restore road communications.
