Hundreds of motorists fined, cars towed for illegal parking in Abu Dhabi

DUBAI - More than 200 cars have been impounded and their owners fined in a recent crackdown on illegal parking in Abu Dhabi. The crackdown came after the Abu Dhabi Department of Transport announced that all public parking spaces on Abu Dhabi island would be paid from September 7. Police recently impounded cars illegally parked from a sandy lot opposite the TwoFour54 building 6 beginning last week. Last Sunday, authorities posted notices on the cars' windshields warning of fines and towing if they continued to park there on Wednesday. "No parking" signs were also erected at the entrance of the sandy lot. Motorists have been given three-week period to secure residency parking permits. On Wednesday, up to 200 cars were towed, with vehicle owners given a Dh500 fine. More trucks were reportedly towed on Thursday.
