The vibrant spirit of the Philippines has rolled into Germany — quite literally — as the country’s most iconic vehicle, the jeepney, makes its dazzling debut at the Frankfurt Book Fair 2025. The Philippines, this year’s Guest of Honor, transformed part of the world’s biggest publishing event into a celebration of Filipino culture. And nothing could represent the nation’s creativity and resilience better than the jeepney — a colorful symbol of Filipino life that continues to charm both locals and foreigners alike. In a post by the National Book Development Board (NBDB), Executive Director Charisse Aquino-Tugade described the jeepney as “a mirror of the vibrancy, openness, and relational nature of the Philippines.” She explained, “The jeepney’s exterior reflects the Filipino spirit, its windowless design shows our openness to others, and its seating embodies our deeply relational culture.” Even the simple act of passing the fare to the driver, Tugade noted, represents bayanihan — the Filipino value of community and cooperation. The jeepney display drew curious visitors as Filipino poets took to the stage after the welcome speech of Juergen Boos, director of the Frankfurt Book Fair, which runs until October 19. But what makes the jeepney so fascinating to the world? Born from the ashes of World War II, these public vehicles began as surplus US military jeeps left behind by American forces. Filipinos, ever resourceful, reimagined them into vibrant passenger vehicles — extending their frames, painting them in bold colors, and adorning them with chrome, stickers, slogans, and religious icons. Each jeepney became a moving art gallery and a reflection of its driver’s personality. Over decades, it evolved from a wartime relic into a cultural icon — representing both nostalgia and innovation. For foreigners, jeepneys are pure wonder. In a world of uniform buses and trains, jeepneys stand out as wild bursts of color — “art in motion.” To ride one is to experience a slice of daily Filipino life: strangers sitting shoulder-to-shoulder, sharing laughter, chatter, and the occasional “bayad po!” as fares travel from hand to hand. So when Frankfurt fairgoers stumbled upon the jeepney — gleaming under European lights, bursting with Filipino color and charm — they weren’t just seeing a vehicle.
