4 persons collared for kidnapping and attempting to sell a 2-and-a-half-year-old boy

  NEW DELHI – Police on Thursday arrested four people for abducting a two-and-a-half-year-old boy and trying to sell him via WhatsApp. The suspects, who were identified by the police as Radha, Sonia, Saroj and Jaan Mohammad, were allegedly members of an illegal adoption and surrogacy syndicate. The suspects were arrested after a WhatsApp user alerted the police after seeing the boy's photo on a WhatsApp group and on television. The missing boy's photo was shown by cable TV operators upon the request of the police after the boy's parents sought help when they couldn't find the lad. During interrogation, Mohammad said he picked up the boy outside gate number 1 near Jama Masjid last June 5 while his parents were preparing for prayers. Mohammad said he brought the lad to Radha's house in Shakurpur. He claimed that Radha assured him of "a handsome share from the sale of the boy." Police said Radha kept the boy in her house for a few days and sold him to Sonia for Rs1 lakh. The child was then taken to Sonia's hideout in Mangolpuri, where he was sold to Saroj, a resident of Raghubir Nagar, for Rs1.10 lakh. Saroj posted details of the child and his photo on a WhatsApp group, with a price tag of Rs1.8 lakh, according to police. "Fortunately, a Whatsapp user had seen the boy's picture on television. On seeing his picture in a WhatsApp group, this person contacted the Jama Masjid police station," a police officer said. A team was formed to track down Saroj but she got wind of information that police were on her trail so she left the child in Raghubir Nagar. In order to avoid suspicion, Saroj called the police and informed them about an "abandoned" child in a temple. The toddler was rescued and when police called the number, it was traced to Saroj. Saroj and the rest of the suspects were then arrested.
