Billionaire has spent more than Dh9M since 2008 to pay off debts of inmates so they can be released

  DUBAI – An Indian businessman has paid off the debts of 132 prisoners languishing at the Ajman penitentiary so that they can be free to return to their respective countries. Firoz Merchant, owner of Pure Gold Jewellers, yesterday turned over to Ajman police and jail officials a Dh150,000 cheque as payment for the debts of the 132 inmates. Merchant said he has allotted Dh3.8 million this year to settle the unpaid dues of prisoners in UAE's jails. Merchant has been paying off the debts of prisoners since 2008 and has shelled out more than Dh9 million for it. So far, a total of 4,500 prisoners have been released because of Merchant's generosity. The 132 prisoners were from Indonesia, India, Pakistan, Philippines, Uzbekistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Ethiopia, Syria, Yemen and Ghana. Even if they already served their sentence, they could not be released from prison because of their debts. Aside from paying off the dues of the 132 prisoners, Merchant also gave them plane tickets to their respective countries and money as fare when they arrive home. "These prisoners are victims of circumstance and are not real criminals. They are in jail because of debt-related cases. Last year was a challenging year for many people who have to suffer jail terms because of bounced cheques and non-availability of cash to pay their dues. That is why I decided to pay off their debts and provide air tickets to go back home and be united with their families," said Merchant. "Most of these prisoners told us that when they are released, they have no money to reach home. They land in their country, they have to take another journey by car or train. Therefore, apart from providing air tickets, we decided to give them transport expenses," Merchant also said. Merchant has been engaged in the gold business since 1989. Pure Gold Jewellers is now a Dh3.6 billion company that employs 5,000 people in India and in the Gulf region.
