An Indian woman who suffered life-changing injuries in a Dubai car crash has been awarded Dh1 million in compensation after a court ruled in her favor. The accident happened in April 2023 near the Bangladesh Consulate in Al Wahida, when Rehmathbi Mamad Sali was struck by a Nissan Patrol while crossing the road at an undesignated area. She suffered a spinal fracture, brain hemorrhage, and partial paralysis in her right arm and leg. She was hospitalized at Rashid Hospital for treatment. Investigations found the Emirati driver at fault for negligence but also held Rehmathbi partly responsible for jaywalking. The driver was fined Dh3,000 while Rehmathbi was fined Dh1,000 in a criminal case related to the incident. Her family, represented by Yab Legal Services CEO Salam Pappinissery, filed a separate civil case for damages. The court ordered the insurance company covering the vehicle at the time of the accident to pay Dh1 million in compensation. Subsequent appeals by the defendants were dismissed, with the Supreme Court upholding the compensation award last month. ICA/Expat Media
