Surgeons were removing a tumor that causing the girl to have fits

  CHENNAI – A 10-year-old girl played her favorite online game on a cellphone as she was being operated on by doctors at the SIMS Hospital to remove a tumor in the most sensitive part of her brain last week. The girl, identified by the Times of India (TOI) as Nandini, had to remain conscious during the procedure so she could talk and move her limbs and the surgeons could tell that the operation is going well. The TOI said Nandini, who is a Class V student and a Bharatanatyam dancer, was brought to the hospital because of sudden fits. A brain scan on Nandini showed that she had a tumor in a part of her brain that controls movement of the left half of the body, including face, hand and leg. SIMS Hospital neurosurgeon Roopesh Kumar had recommended that Nandini undergo surgery as he told her parents that if the tumor grew, it could cause paralysis or could be fatal. Last July, a musician in Bengaluru underwent a seven-hour brain surgery in the city's hospital to correct a neurological disorder and the patient played a guitar during the procedure. Thirty-two-year-old Tushar (not his real name) had dystonia - a movement disorder in which a person's muscles contract uncontrollably. The contraction causes the affected body part to twist involuntarily, resulting in repetitive movements or abnormal postures. Kushar had to remain awake so the surgeons could tell if he could freely move his fingers that had been affected by dystonia. In Nandini's case, Kumar said he did not do craniotomy wherein a bone disc is removed from the skull to allow access to the brain while the patient is unconscious because the tumor was in the sensitive part of the brain. "If we accidentally touched a wrong nerve, it could cause complete paralysis of the left half of her body," he said. Nandini's uncle said he was in the operating room while his niece was being operated on. "Nandini was playing Candy Crush on my cellphone. She moved her hands and legs when we asked her to do so. The surgeon had to make sure that the point he is operating on does not affect her mobility. She was brave," said Nandini's uncle. Nandini was discharged from the hospital on Friday last week. She said she would resume Bharatanatyam practice after a few days.
