Indian caught trying to smuggle gold worth Dh229,000

An Indian passenger from an Abu Dhabi flight has been caught trying to smuggle 954.70 grams of gold worth Dh229,000, Customs officials said. The passenger was caught by Cochin Customs Air Intelligence on Sunday (December 10) after his Air Arabia flight from Abu Dhabi arrived in India’s Cochin airport. He hid the smuggled gold inside his body. "Four capsule-shaped packets containing gold in compound form totally weighing 954.70 grams concealed inside his body were recovered and seized," officials said. On November 22, three foreign nationals who arrived at Indira Gandhi International Airport from Dubai were arrested for trying to smuggle 3,735 grams of gold. Bringing gold into India is subject to taxes, however, returning Indians and passengers are allowed duty-free gold for personal use, with a limit of 20 grams worth up to Rs50,000 (Dh2,200) for men and up to 40 grams worth Rs100,000 (Dh4,400) for women.
