An Indian pilot was killed after a Tejas fighter aircraft crashed during a flying display at the Dubai Airshow on Friday (November 21), authorities confirmed. The Indian Air Force (IAF) identified the pilot as Wing Commander Namansh Syal, a resident of Himachal Pradesh’s Kangra district. The 37-year-old Syal was performing an aerial demonstration when his fighter jet crashed at Al Maktoum International Airport. The Dubai Government Media Office said in a statement on X: “A Tejas fighter aircraft from India participating in today’s flying display at the Dubai Airshow has crashed, resulting in the tragic death of the pilot. Firefighting and emergency teams responded rapidly to the incident and are currently managing the situation on-site.” The crash occurred at around 2:10pm, moments after the aircraft had completed several passes over the airfield during an 8-minute aerial display. Witnesses said the jet appeared to lose control before diving toward the ground inside the airshow site. Emergency crews immediately deployed firefighting foam across the crash area. Footage of the crash showed the fighter jet plunging to the ground and the erupting into flames upon impact, sending thick plumes of smoke into the sky above Al Maktoum International Airport. An SUV with diplomatic plates bearing the Indian flag arrived shortly after the crash. Despite the tragedy, flight demonstrations resumed about 90 minutes later, with the Russian Knights performing overhead while crews continued clearing the scene. The Indian Embassy in the UAE confirmed that it is coordinating with local authorities, stating, “We deeply regret and condole the loss of life in the accident involving IAF Tejas aircraft at Dubai Air Show. Embassy and Consulate teams are on the ground and extending all assistance.” “The pilot sustained fatal injuries in the accident. IAF deeply regrets the loss of life and stands firmly with the bereaved family in this time of grief,” according to the IAF. A court of inquiry has been ordered to determine the cause. Indian officials, including former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, called for a thorough investigation. “A swift and proper inquiry is needed to determine the cause of the crash. The safety and lives of our pilots are of the utmost importance,” Kejriwal said. The Tejas, manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, is India’s homegrown multi-role light combat aircraft. Friday marked the final day of the 19th Dubai Airshow, which hosted 1,500 exhibitors—including 440 first-time participants—and welcomed more than 148,000 visitors and 490 delegations from 115 countries.
