Indian wanted in Dh624 million bounced cheque cases arrested in Dubai
DUBAI - An Indian businessman wanted by police for issuing Dh624 million in dud cheques has been caught after evading arrest for a month, police said on Tuesday (February 6).
The businessman was arrested after landing at the Dubai International Airport.
A team of undercover police lured him back to Dubai where he thought he could make more money in a new deal, said Brigadier Ahmad Bin Galita, director of Rafaa police station.
The businessman had bought petroleum products from three big companies in Dubai and shipped them to India, issuing cheques even though he knew his bank account had insufficient funds.
“He had a business with about Dh1 billion with the companies in the past and paid it at the time. He issued three cheques worth Dh624 million before the New Year vacation knowing the banks would be closed and the companies won’t know he had no credit in his account,” Bin Galita said.
The businessman then fled the UAE before the companies could realise that he did not have money to pay them for the transactions.
His case has now been referred to the Dubai Public Prosecution and he has been charged with fraud. GAD/Expat Media
