Employees disheartened but newspaper assures there'll be no retrenchments

  MANILA – The Prieto family, owners of the Philippine Daily Inquirer (PDI), is selling its majority shares to Ramon Ang, president of the food and beverage conglomerate San Miguel Corp. The Prietos held a general assembly with employees of the Inquirer Group of Publications on Monday to inform them of the talks with Ang, which shocked and surprised the rank-and-file as well senior managers. An Inquirer employee who attended the general assembly told Rappler that Inquirer board chairperson Marixi Prieto was emotional while reading a statement. The Inquirer Group of Publications said in a statement that after 25 years, the Prietos were divesting from the Inquirer "to maximize growth opportunities" and that a review will be soon done by Ang. The Inquirer is the most widely-read broadsheet in the Philippines with a daily circulation of more than 200,000 copies. It was founded on Dec. 9, 1985 by the late publisher Eugenia Apostol. Another Inquirer employee said no one within the company knew about the negotiations between the Prietos and Ang, not even those in the business beat. The employee said: "We had a number of meetings where we were told to be brave, to soldier on. Never did we think we'd be sold off to a Duterte campaign donor at that. Just imagine our disbelief." Ang donated millions of pesos to the presidential campaign of then candidate Rodrigo Duterte in last year's elections. Those in the editorial department expressed worry about maintaining their independence. An editorial employee told Rappler: "There is worry that the new management would affect our editorial independence – something that the Prietos have valued and people from the editorial department live and strive by." They hope their editors would be "strong and brave enough" to resist pressure from the management, if the latter tries to interfere later on. Meanwhile, the Inquirer assured in a statement that existing employment contracts will still be in effect as Ang vowed to "pursue the highest standards of journalism."
